During the winter months, you may experience heating system malfunctions. Being money is tight around the holiday season, some homeowners try to fix the issue themselves. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you don’t get ahead of yourself! Here are some ways you can diagnose your heater or furnace…

Check The Thermostat– The first thing you want to do is rule out the thermostat. If the tstat is blank, change the batteries. Verify all the settings are set correctly. Make sure the thermostat isn’t in “Cool” when you’re trying to heat the home. If after changing the batteries or checking the settings, there could also be a wiring issue or the thermostat is faulty.

Verify Power- Without any power going in, nothing will turn on and operate. Check to make sure you have power by verifying all switches are on and that no breakers or fuses are tripped or blown

Check Airflow- Something so simple could prevent proper operation of the heater or furnace. Verify your filter isn’t dirty. Home filters should be replaced every 30 days. Packed filters full of dust can reduce the airflow and cause other issues. If the filters are good, you can hire a professional home energy specialist that can go through your home to find ways to improve airflow.

Inspect Burner Flames- Take a look at the burner flames… You want to see the flame blue in color and that the flames aren’t too high or too low. If the color isn’t blue and the flames seem to big or small, there could be a problem with the fuel mixture.
