Are expensive A/C filters better?

The answer to this question is yes, and no. A single person with no pets and no allergies will not need the heavy duty of a filter like a family of 4 with 2 dogs. The more expensive a filter is, the better of a job it will do, sure, but not everyone needs it. With fewer people and no pets in the home, there is often much less to filter out of the air. If you have allergies, a better filter that helps filter out allergens will be the best choice for you.

Do the more expensive filters work better than cheaper ones? It isn’t a matter of the price here it is more a matter of how they work and what they are made of. Allergen filters that cost upwards of $30 are called “high energy particulate air filters” or HEPA filters. These filters are made to trap and lock in the tiniest of allergens from the air, and they do work very well.  Does everyone need these expensive filters? No, but they don’t hurt. The most important thing you can do to help the air quality in your home is to change whatever filter you choose often. Once a month is recommended, but if your home starts to get dustier than usual, it may need to be changed sooner.
